A review from a reader : - Sue Waddacor, Canada “This is the most huge 'thank you' for the book you sent - I read it in as close to 'one sitting' as is possible with meals to cook etc!! Our family moved to Southern Rhodesia as it then was in 1947 - and almost from the start I was transported back to the world of my childhood - what happy days those were! As the book progressed so many things resonated - and I can truly say that I have never read a book with which I could so readily identify. I believe that he is totally even-handed in what he writes - and I think that his skill as a writer and journalist are so apparent - he is succinct where he needs to be and quite lyrical at other times. I think his thumb nail sketches of political history and the events that had developed, the attitudes, the personalities are so sharply drawn and so concisely - I never felt I was 'bogged down' in lengthy explanations - and how clear sighted he was! I was more familiar with farms in the Chakari region near Gatooma and Hartley - spent as much of the school holidays as I was allowed with friends there - the crops were different but the lifestyle was not - the feeling of neighbourliness, the witchcraft and the wild life! I was thinking about the witchcraft - its strange how from a young age one knew about it but just somehow blotted out on it. We were in Bulawayo, at Mpilo Hospital at the time of the riots in the late 1950's - and I remember them well. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me back a bit of my childhood.”. Review by Anton D Alberts : Wordsworth Books, Knysna “This book is absolutely superb. Duke Acheson reflects on the extraordinary years he spent in Africa. Its A compelling story told with honesty tenderness and loads of humor the author’s vivid descriptions of life in Rhodesia are totally engrossing as he transports the reader readily back into those times, the descriptions of the people, the colors and the culture are all vividly described. there is also at all times a deep sense of family values. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and was sorry that it all had to end.” “Launching this book was a great success and meeting the family / characters made it even more special.”
